How to Apply for a Thai Education (Non-ED) e-Visa: Step-by-Step

If you’re planning to study in Thailand, whether it’s Thai language, Muay Thai, university coursework, or a cooking program at an accredited school, you need a Non-Immigrant ED visa before you board that flight.

The good news: you can now apply online through the official Thai e-Visa system. No queuing at an embassy, no paper forms mailed back and forth. Here’s exactly how to do it, what you’ll need, and what to watch out for.

What Is the Thai Non-ED Visa?

The Non-Immigrant ED visa (the “ED” stands for Education) is a 90-day single-entry visa issued to foreigners who want to study full-time at a school, university, or accredited training institute in Thailand.

It covers a wide range of programs:

University degree programs
Thai language courses
Muay Thai at licensed camps
Traditional Thai massage at certified schools
Buddhist meditation retreats at registered temples
Internships as part of an academic curriculum
Workshops, conferences, and company training programs

One thing to be clear on: this visa is for actual enrollment. You need a real school that’s registered with the Thai Ministry of Education. Immigration officers have been cross-checking enrollment records since 2025, and visas tied to inactive schools have been revoked. Pick a legitimate institution.

Who Can Apply?

You can apply for the Non-ED e-Visa if:

You have been accepted into an accredited educational program in Thailand
You are applying from outside Thailand before your trip
Your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your intended arrival date
You hold a passport from an eligible country listed on the official Thai e-Visa portal

Documents You’ll Need

Get these ready before you open the application. Missing even one can delay or kill your approval.

For everyone:

Passport with at least 6 months validity and at least one blank visa page. Scan the bio-data page clearly, no glare, no shadows.
Recent passport-style photo taken within the last 6 months. White background, full face, no hats or dark glasses.
Letter of Acceptance or Enrollment Confirmation from your school or university in Thailand. It must be on official letterhead, signed by an authorized person, and include their ID card or passport copy.
Copy of the school’s registration certificate or license issued by the relevant authority.
Financial evidence showing you can support yourself, typically bank statements covering the last 3 to 6 months. Some embassies ask for a minimum balance of 20,000 THB per person.
Flight itinerary showing entry and exit dates (a booking confirmation works, you don’t always need a fully paid ticket).

For primary or secondary school students: You’ll also need an approval letter from the relevant authority under Thailand’s Ministry of Education, such as the Office of the Private Education Commission. Universities and international schools are generally exempt from this extra step.

For internships: Include an invitation letter from the Thai company or organization detailing the internship program, plus a reference letter from your home institution confirming the internship is part of your curriculum.

Tip: Make sure your full name matches across every document exactly as it appears in your passport. A mismatch, even a middle name, is one of the most common rejection triggers.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply Online

Step 1: Select Your Visa Type

Start a new application and select Non-Immigrant Visa (ED). Double-check this before moving on. Selecting the wrong visa type means starting over.

Step 2: Fill in Your Application Form

Enter your personal details exactly as they appear in your passport. This includes your name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and expiration date. Enter your intended entry date and the name of your school in Thailand.

Step 3: Upload Your Documents

Scan every document clearly. Files are generally accepted in PDF or JPEG format, and there are size limits per file. A blurry scan is one of the top reasons for automatic rejection. Do a quick scan quality check before uploading.

Step 4: Pay the Visa Fee

Pay online using a credit or debit card. Fees vary depending on your nationality and the embassy processing your application. The fee is non-refundable, so make sure everything is correct before you hit submit.

Step 5: Wait for Processing

Standard processing takes 3 to 10 working days. It can stretch to 15 days during peak seasons or if your file is incomplete. Apply at least three weeks before your departure date.

If your status shows “Pending,” check your email daily, including your spam folder. The consulate may request additional documents.

Step 6: Print Your e-Visa

Once approved, you’ll receive your e-Visa by email. Print it out. You’ll hand the printed e-Visa along with your passport to immigration officers when you arrive at Suvarnabhumi or another port of entry. A screenshot on your phone is not enough.

Validity and Extensions

The Non-Immigrant ED visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, single entry.

Once you’re in Thailand and enrolled in your program, you can extend your stay at the local Immigration Bureau. Extensions are granted in increments of 90 days, up to a maximum of 1 year, depending on your course length.

You’ll need to bring proof of ongoing enrollment and pay a fee of approximately ___ THB each time you extend.

Important: If you leave Thailand on a standard Non-ED visa and want to return, you’ll generally need a re-entry permit before you go. Without it, your visa is considered used and you’d need to apply fresh from abroad.

What About the Non-ED Plus Visa?

If you’re enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program or higher at a Thai university, you may be eligible for the Non-ED Plus visa. The main advantages:

You can leave and re-enter Thailand without needing a re-entry permit
Your university submits the extension application on your behalf
After graduation, you can extend your stay for up to 1 year to job hunt or travel

If you’re doing a language course or short program, the standard Non-ED visa is your option.
